Healthy Habit: Exercise

Passion: My passion is cycling and to become an educator for the younger generations.

Career:
I am employed at St. Simons Presbyterian nursery, and I help out with the preschoolers on Wednesdays. I am also a student at the College of Coastal Georgia.

Family:
I have a 16-year-old sister who attends Glynn Academy. I have a grandmother who recently became a widow. My grandfather was a retired Methodist minister. My father was the one who really encouraged me to cycle regularly. He used to cycle around Georgia and he loved to cycle with me and my sister. My mom was an assistant nurse for a nursing home. They both passed away in 2013 as I was entering the 7th grade.

What motivated you to start exercising regularly?
My dad motivated me to start exercising regularly. He used to cycle around Georgia with a group of cyclists. He made cycling a hobby and a healthy habit. He loved being outside and enjoying nature. Since he passed before his time, I continue to keep his cycling routine going. I don’t know if I will ever get to cycle across Georgia like he did. He was a strong man, and he had an amazing motivation to be active. Listening to upbeat music while I cycle motivates me to challenge myself to go at a faster pace.

Tell us about your exercise regime:
I wake up around 8 or 9 and eat breakfast. When 11:00 am hits, I start getting ready to go cycling at 1:00 p.m. I usually ride for two hours or so. When I cycle from the north end of the island to the south, music helps me continue cycling.

What do you find most enjoyable about your exercise habit?
I find being outside and getting my heart pumping while I listen to music is the most enjoyable part of cycling. Cycling, for me, is to get away from all life’s problems and just take in God’s beautiful creation. When I cycle across this wonderful island, I see a beautiful world that people take for granted.

Have you always been active,
or did you have to force yourself to take exercise time for yourself?

I have always been active, especially as a child. I always loved being outside when the sun was shining. When people ask me if I like cold or hot weather. I say that I embrace the hot weather; I enjoy it very much when it’s hot.

Do you ever dread it? If so, what do you do to get going?
No, I don’t dread it at all. I look forward to starting off my day energized.

How is your approach to exercise achievable?
I think my exercise approach is achievable because by the end of my ride I am sweating and exhausted from pedaling. I know I achieved something for the day if I get my heart racing.

How has exercising enhanced your life? Your body?
Your overall feeling of well-being? Your mental health?

Exercising has helped in so many ways, such as getting out of the bed in the morning, and not being lazy all day. I would rather exercise than be a couch potato. Exercising makes my body feel better overall for my well-being. It does wonders for mental health, keeping it in balance.

What would you say to encourage others to start a healthy habit of exercising?
I would encourage others to make a healthy habit of achieving one or two less challenging obstacles to start the day so they can achieve more challenging obstacles. Not all exercise methods are for everyone. Make your goals a priority.

Why are healthy habits important to you?
Healthy habits are important to me because it encourages me not to drag through life. It encourages me to keep doing my best at being a healthy human being.
