We asked the Surgeon: What is the Latest and Greatest in Plastic Surgery Procedures?
by Diane G. Bowen, MD

Non-invasive is all the buzz in the world of cosmetic procedures that can help restore a more youthful appearance almost anywhere on your body. However, in talking with a surgeon who is board certified in plastic surgery, we found out that some elective surgeries are still the only way to achieve certain results. The great news is when you combine surgery with some of today’s non-invasive, state-of-the-art technology, which is a true art in plastic surgery, your results can be exactly what you wanted. We asked about some of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, and here’s what we learned.

Breast Augmentation: What's the latest scoop?
Breast Augmentation has been around for more than 50 years and is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure performed in the US with over 300,000 procedures each year. Breast Augmentation surgery includes enlarging the breast using a breast implant to enhance the size and shape.

Why would a person consider having breast augmentation?

• They are looking to increase fullness and projection of their breast
• Improve the balance of their figure
• Enhance their self-image and self-confidence

There are different types of implants and different ways in which the implant can be placed. Depending on your body’s anatomy and your rejuvenation goals, the proper implant and placement is ideal to discuss during a consultation with a plastic surgeon. Each one of us are individual people and come in different shapes and sizes, therefore there is no “one size fits all” for breast augmentation. The goal of a surgery like this, is to enhance your natural beauty not to create a “Barbie” beauty. To learn more about Breast Augmentation visit

Mommy Makeover: What is it?
Mommy Makeover is the familiar term for a personalized set of cosmetic procedures designed to help a woman address common effects of childbearing and aging on the breasts and body. These procedures are designed to restore and improve upon a woman’s pre-pregnancy appearance. Mommy makeovers can include cosmetic surgery, minimally invasive procedures, non-surgical treatments, or a combination.

Some questions to ask yourself to see if you are a candidate:

• Does your post baby body keep you from
wearing the desired fashions of your choice?
• Does even Victoria Secret lack the uplifting technology
you need to fit into that cute V-neck dress or shirt?
• Does your “grandmother’s hips” keep you from trying on a bathing suit?

While plastic surgery is not the answer to all your fashion issues, it can play a role in helping you feel more comfortable in your clothes. Body contouring and breast enhancement/lifting are all common surgeries, which if used correctly, can help a woman harmonize her shape without resorting to uncomfortable, industrial-strength undergarments.

Reshaping after a Baby

• It is best to wait 4-6 months after pregnancy before deciding to proceed with any elective surgery.
• Complete breast feeding for 6 weeks prior to any breast surgery
What can a Mommy Makeover Address:
• Large or sagging breasts
• Stretched out tummy skin and muscles
• Stretch marks or stretched out tummy skin that didn’t go back

Surgery is a reasonable, and maybe the only, way to restore pre-baby appearance. Having a consultation with a plastic surgeon is a great way to determine if you are a candidate and what personalized surgical plan is ideal to get you to your desired outcome.

I’m interested in a tummy tuck,
what do I have to accomplish before I’m a candidate?
Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and skin and can restore weakened muscles to create a smoother, firmer abdominal profile. Having a flatter, firmer midsection can dramatically improve the way clothing fits and looks, helping a person to feel more confident and comfortable in their own body.

Who would benefit from a Tummy Tuck?

• Men and women
• Diet and exercise have helped you lose weight, but your abdomen still protrudes and lacks tone
• Your abdominal muscles and skin are stretched
and sagging following pregnancy
• After losing significant amounts of weight,
you now have loose, excess skin hanging around your belly
• You have always had a belly that “sticks out”
even though you are in good shape.

This procedure is not designed as a weight loss procedure. Candidates at their sustained body weight will have more successful outcomes. The goal should be to create a natural appearance with the least scarring to get an optimum desired result.

Having a consultation with a plastic surgeon is going to be the best way to determine which type of tummy tuck is ideal for you. has additional information about Tummy Tuck procedures.

Is liposuction still popular,
or are there new procedures to spot-treat fat?
Balance, proportion and contour are fundamental elements of an attractive human form. Liposuction is used to sculpt a better shape to almost any area of the body, achieving dramatic improvements with subtle changes. Liposuction can be used independently, but it can also be combined with a tummy tuck or lift procedure. Liposuction removes excess deposits of fat to sculpt an improved shape. It does not address loose or sagging skin. None of these procedures are designed to be weight loss tools. An ideal candidate should be at their desired body weight, and it has been maintained for a consistent period of time. Just like when you let the air out of balloon that has been blown up for a while the texture of the balloon has wrinkles, and it doesn’t go back to its perfect tight shape before it had air in it. This was the struggle we faced with liposuction, we could remove the stubborn fat pouch that was resistant to exercise or diet, but the skin on the outside was left with wrinkles.

The great thing about the aesthetic world is it is constantly improving the technology and procedures to make this better both for the provider and the patient. We have added an advanced body contouring procedure that improves your silhouette by both removing unwanted fat pockets AND tightening the skin at the same time. The best part is no anesthesia is required and there is no cutting. BodyTite by Inmode™ uses RFAL (Radio Frequency Assisted Lipolysis) technology that uses thermal energy or heat to promote skin tightening and removes unwanted fat. This new, state-of-the-art procedure can be used independently or in conjunction with traditional procedures, such as liposuction or surgery body lifts, such as tummy tucks or brachioplasty, also known as arm lift, a surgery that removes the extra skin and tissue from the back part of the upper arm. The other great thing about this new procedure is that it can be used in the hard to reach places such as the “bra fat,” the excess skin that can stick out of the bra into the armpit area and its precise for tightening the small areas like the fat pockets that can form under the eyes.

What’s new in facial rejuvenation?
Just like BodyTite for the body there is also FaceTite for the face and neck.  FaceTite by Inmode™ is a new procedure which provides a dramatic improvement in skin laxity and reduction of excess fat for the face and neck. This is a minimally invasive procedure that doesn’t require anesthesia, there is no cutting, in turn leading to a reduction in downtime. This procedure is ideal for someone who has lost the definition in their jawline, has jowls, or a “turkey neck” or “double chin.”
