Shop With Your Heart... and Your Head
February 2022 Issue
by Zoe Herrington
It’s the time of year when many are shopping for beautiful love tokens, or even engagement rings, which is naturally a matter of the heart. However, you should also use your head when buying jewelry, especially diamonds. After more than 45 years in the business, I can offer some important shopping tips to be sure you are getting the best diamond for your dollar:
Determine your budget:
It’s important to have a firm idea of what you want to spend. If you know what your budget is, you can let your heart guide you to the perfect item within those parameters. Don’t allow an aggressive salesperson to push you to spend beyond your plans. Remind them of your limit and insist they only show you what fits within it.
Shop and compare:
To be certain that you are not comparing apples to oranges, use an independent report on any gemstones, particularly diamonds. The most consistent and reliable reports come from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). These reports go beyond the 4 Cs of diamonds (cut, clarity, carat and color) to give you specifics. This can be especially important when evaluating the cut grade. A good jeweler will help you understand the report, and a good report will help you make an accurate comparison. Ask to speak with the store owner, or manager, if possible. Ask them if you should shop and compare before making your purchase. The answer should always be YES!
Ask about in-house financing
before pulling out your credit card:
The terms are often more favorable and could save you money in the long run.
Don’t let an in-house warranty
influence your decision:
Regardless of where you make your purchase, you should insure your jewelry with an independent company. I recommend Jewelers Mutual, which is owned by Lloyd’s of London.
Now that you know how to keep your head while shopping for the one you love, you can really put your heart into the process without getting carried away!
